Units of measurements

The measurable quantities, within the metrology competence, are expressed as the product of a numerical value and the unit of measurement. The theoretical questions in connection with units of measurements are examined by the scientific metrology. The public usage of the units of measurements is regulated by legal metrology and the international cooperation and standardisation provide the uniformity of their interpretation and usage.

Legal units of measurements

The more important units of measurements are given in the decree (127/1991 X.9.) of Act on Legal Metrology (XLV/1991). Onto the expression of the value of all quantities, if the law establishes legal units of measurements, it is necessary to use it. The standards imply the detailed rules concerning the units of measurements.

Type of the legal units of measurements:

  • units of International System of Units (SI)
  • units outside the SI (are given in decree)
  • derived units from units of SI and outside of SI
  • the multiples and submultiples of these units by combining them with the SI prefixes (are given in decree)

The Annex of Act on Legal Metrology contains the most important legal units of measurements. The internationally standardised symbols and units of the measurable quantities can be find in the series of ISO standards as ISO 1000 (SI units) and ISO 31-0 (Quantities and units).

If the result of a measurement or a value is expressed with legal units of measurements, it is possible also to give them in other units.
